Ukrainian officials accuse Russia of targeting civilians after a passenger train carrying nearly 300 people was struck in the Kharkiv region on January 27.
The Russian military used attack drones to hit the train, according to Ukraine’s state rail operator Ukrzaliznytsia and Oleksiy Kuleba. The train was the Barvinkove–Lviv–Chop service.
Preliminary reports say three Shahed-type drones were used. One detonated in front of the locomotive; another hit a passenger car, sparking a fire. There were 291 people on board at the time.
Train crew and emergency responders evacuated passengers. Two people were injured and taken to hospitals, officials said. Reserve buses are being arranged for those unable to continue their journey, and assistance is being provided to passengers waiting for return services at stations.
Medical teams, rescuers and police are at the scene. Ukrzaliznytsia is coordinating the response, supporting those affected and working to restore service.
Kuleba called the strike on a civilian train “a direct act of Russian terror against the civilian population,” saying there was no military target.
