A compromise on Donbas has not yet been reached, and Ukraine is not prepared to accept decisions that would violate its territorial integrity.
President Volodymyr Zelensky said Ukraine will not give up Donbas or the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant without a fight, reports Novosti.LIVE.
According to the head of state, U.S. partners have proposed a compromise in the form of a free economic zone. But no agreement has been reached so far. Zelensky stressed that Ukraine must continue to control the territories it currently holds.
“Ukraine is not ready for compromises that lead to a violation of territorial integrity; we will not give the Russians Donbas and the ZNPP without a fight,” the President said.
Zelensky said that of the 20 points in the current American plan, Ukraine disagrees with two. The remaining provisions are acceptable to Kyiv. He also emphasized that the document should be signed at the presidential level.
“When we talk about compromise, it’s about what both sides have to do, not only about the Ukrainian side and a Ukrainian compromise. We believe tough demands on Ukraine are definitely not a compromise. That’s a change to Ukraine’s territorial integrity,” he said.
Zelensky also said that during a meeting between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump, Donbas was likely discussed.
At the same time, Ukraine was not informed about any understandings reached in Anchorage, though there are signals that key issues were discussed there.
A representative of the UAE government said last week’s discussions among U.S., Ukrainian and Russian delegations took place in a constructive and positive atmosphere.
After talks in the UAE, Donald Trump gave a positive assessment of the momentum toward ending the war.
However, some sources noted that the trilateral meeting among Ukraine, Russia and the United States in the UAE did not lead to significant changes on political issues. In particular, Russian representatives continue to insist that Ukraine withdraw its units from the non-occupied part of Donetsk region.
According to U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the number of unresolved issues has been reduced to one - territory. The next meeting in the UAE on February 1 may not necessarily include the United States - it could involve only the Ukrainian and Russian delegations.
