Russia's Duma threatens weapons of retribution strikes on Ukraine amid deep freeze

Russian lawmakers are calling for the use of powerful weapons against Ukraine. Members of Russia’s State Duma want to employ them starting next week, coinciding with the peak of a cold snap.

The Russian State Duma is pressing for strikes on Ukraine with the so-called “weapons of retribution,” Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin said.

“State Duma deputies insist on using more powerful weapons - ‘weapons of retribution,’” Volodin said, without specifying what kind of weapons he meant.

He added that lawmakers say the goals of the so-called “special military operation,” as Russia refers to its war against Ukraine, are being achieved.

Volodin noted that “new problems for Ukrainians” will be created starting next week, that is, in February.

The threat comes as a severe cold spell grips the country, with the peak expected on February 3–4. Forecasters predict temperatures could fall to minus 30 degrees Celsius in northern Ukraine and the Poltava and Kharkiv regions, with nighttime lows of minus 21 to minus 27 degrees elsewhere.

A day earlier, U.S. President Donald Trump said he personally appealed to Putin not to attack Ukrainian cities for a week.

Overnight on January 27, Russian forces struck an energy facility in Odesa. Energy officials say repairs will take a long time because the damage is “colossal.”
