Ukraine reports record Russian losses in January, including 1,099 artillery systems

Ukraine’s Defense Forces inflicted some of the heaviest Russian losses in recent months during January, the Defense Ministry said on its website.

According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Russia lost more than 31,700 personnel - roughly the size of nearly three divisions.

In January, Ukraine’s Defense Forces destroyed or disabled 137 Russian tanks - more than four tank battalions. That is the highest monthly figure since May 2025, when 138 Russian tanks were knocked out.

Russia also suffered significant artillery losses: Ukrainian troops destroyed 1,099 artillery systems - more than 60 artillery battalions - the highest level in the last five months.

Ukraine’s forces also hit 45 multiple launch rocket systems, 24 air defense systems and 4,021 vehicles. The last time Russia lost more vehicles in a month was April 2025, with 4,104.

At the same time, overall Russian armored vehicle losses in January 2026 - as throughout 2025 - were not as large as in 2023–2024, when Russia was losing 300–500 armored vehicles monthly. The reason, Ukraine says, is the significant depletion of Russia’s stockpiles of armored vehicles and artillery systems.

Earlier, Ukraine’s military said it struck a repair base, UAV command posts and other Russian military sites in the Russian-occupied parts of Zaporizhzhia and Donetsk regions, as well as in Russia’s Kursk and Bryansk regions.
