Russia launches overnight barrage on Ukraine with ballistic missiles and 183 drones amid Abu Dhabi talks

Overnight into Thursday, February 5, Russian forces fired two Iskander-M ballistic missiles and sent 183 attack drones - including Shahed, Gerbera, Italmas and other types - Ukraine’s Air Force said on Telegram.

The missiles were launched from the annexed Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea, while the drones originated from Bryansk, Oryol, Kursk, Millerovo in Russia’s Rostov region, and from Russian-controlled Donetsk in Ukraine. Nearly 110 of the drones were Shahed-type UAVs, the Air Force said. Preliminary data indicate Ukrainian units shot down or suppressed 156 enemy drones. Impacts from ballistic missiles and 22 strike drones were recorded at 16 locations, and debris from downed drones fell at seven sites, according to the statement.

Russia’s strikes focused on railway infrastructure in the Sumy region, according to Oleksii Kuleba, Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister for Restoration. In the Shostka district, a female railway worker came under fire and received medical care. Another strike hit a “Wagon of Invincibility,” a railcar set up to keep residents warm, Kuleba wrote on Telegram.

“Railway buildings and a locomotive were also damaged. Despite the attack, as soon as the security situation allowed, railway workers resumed train traffic. The railway’s energy infrastructure in this area was also under targeted fire,” the statement said. Russia also struck a railway station in the Okhtyrka district with drones, according to Kuleba.

“This is another act of terrorism against Ukrainian logistics. The enemy is trying to stop train traffic; Ukrainian Railways is strengthening safety protocols and continues operations,” the deputy prime minister wrote.

Two women, ages 79 and 89, were injured in Kyiv’s Solomianskyi district. Facades and windows in four apartment buildings were damaged, the capital’s police said. In the Darnytskyi district, a residential building’s facade was also damaged. In the Obolonskyi district, drone debris fell on a parking lot, igniting two cars. In the Shevchenkivskyi district, a drone struck the roof of an office building, sparking a fire.

In the Dnipropetrovsk region, Russian forces hit the Kryvyi Rih district with a missile; no casualties were reported, wrote regional chief Oleksandr Hanzha. In the Synelnykove district, fires broke out after drone strikes in the Petropavlivka, Pokrovske and Vasylkivka communities, damaging an enterprise, an administrative building, private homes and outbuildings, the regional administration said. A gymnasium was damaged in the Yuriyivka community of the Pavlohrad district. FPV drone and artillery strikes were recorded in the Nikopol district.

The same day, talks among Ukrainian, Russian and US delegations continued in the UAE . The first day was assessed positively by the parties. However, the most difficult issues remain unresolved, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said.
