Syrskyi: Ukraine presses offensive on parts of the front, Russia made no significant gains in January

Ukrainian units are conducting offensive actions in roughly a quarter of combat engagements on certain sectors of the front, Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi said Friday during a briefing with journalists, according to Interfax-Ukraine.

“On some sectors, about a quarter of combat clashes are Ukrainian units on the offensive. Their goal is to keep the enemy under constant pressure, inflict losses and prevent any advance. This tactic is delivering results,” Syrskyi said.

He said Ukraine’s Defense Forces carried out three offensive operations in 2025 — two inside Russia’s Belgorod and Kursk regions and a third along the Dobropillya axis. “These actions disrupted the enemy’s plans to seize Donetsk region and to create so‑called buffer zones,” he added.

Syrskyi asserted that Russia made no significant operational gains in January. He said the active front line runs roughly 1,200 kilometers and that the depth of battle formations is expanding as drones reshape the battlefield - now stretching 15 to 20 kilometers deep.

According to Syrskyi, the size of Russia’s grouping has held steady over the past six months at around 711,000 to 712,000 troops, including the operational reserve. He said Moscow has fully met, and even exceeded, its manning targets - an indication, he argued, that losses are outpacing replenishment. On average, he said, Russia is losing about 1,000 to 1,100 soldiers daily.

Separately, the commander of Ukraine’s drone forces, Robert “Madyar” Brovdi, said Russia in January lost more soldiers than it mobilized - the second time that has happened since the start of the full‑scale invasion.

Earlier, Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov set a strategic goal of eliminating 50,000 Russian occupiers per month. Ukraine has said its forces killed 35,000 Russian troops in December, losses it says were verified on video.
