Italian police probe 'sabotage' on rail lines to Olympics

On February 7, 2026, Italian police began investigating three separate incidents of damage to rail infrastructure in northern Italy, specifically around the city of Bologna and on a track section near Pesaro. These incidents caused disruptions on high-speed rail lines critical to the transportation of thousands of people heading to and from the upcoming Milan Cortina Winter Olympic Games. Officials suspect the acts may be sabotage, although no group has claimed responsibility. The incidents included damage to rails and signaling equipment. The Transport Minister Matteo Salvini noted the significant impact on travelers and emphasized cooperation among authorities and rail operators to mitigate the disruptions. Milan is co-hosting the Winter Games starting in July 2026.
