Ukraine seeks emergency power aid from Poland after Russian strikes on grid

Kyiv says it cannot independently address the fallout from the latest Russian strike on Ukraine’s power grid.

Ukraine has requested emergency energy assistance from Poland after a new mass Russian attack on facilities across the country’s power system, Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal said.

He said dispatchers at Ukrenergo have already activated emergency power cuts to stabilize the grid and prevent a complete collapse in some regions.  The minister added that energy crews are doing everything possible to fix the damage. In some areas, repairs will begin immediately once conditions allow.

The Russian strike hit overnight on February 7 and combined strategic aircraft with attack drones. Key elements of the grid were targeted, including trunk substations and 750 kV and 330 kV transmission lines that move power between regions.

Generation facilities were also damaged. In particular, the Burshtyn and Dobrotvir thermal power plants - key to electricity supply in western Ukraine - came under attack. The destruction created a power deficit, forcing Kyiv to urgently seek help from neighboring countries.
