Kyiv: Russia launches Kinzhal missiles at Ukraine, two shot down

Around 14:40 local time on February 11, Russia launched a Kinzhal missile at Ukraine, Ukrainian monitoring channels reported. The missile flew over the northern part of the region toward the west, and a loud blast was heard in Lviv.

Within seconds of launch, the Russian Kinzhal reached Zhytomyr region, according to a monitoring channel. Alerts then indicated the Russian strike assets were approaching Rivne and Lviv.

Ukraine’s Air Force warned at about 14:38 that Russian MiG-31 aircraft—carriers of Kinzhal missiles—had moved to launch positions. A minute later, a high‑speed target was tracked passing Zviahel, Zhytomyr and Rivne en route to Lviv. A subsequent alert at 16:49 again warned that western Ukraine and Lviv were under threat. Local channels said air defenses engaged targets over the city.

The Lviv Regional Military Administration and the Air Force’s regional command had not yet reported consequences of the February 11 Kinzhal strikes on Lviv. Mayor Andriy Sadovyi confirmed air defense activity but provided no details.

The Ukrainian Air Force and monitoring channels indicated Russia may have launched three Kinzhal missiles on February 11. The Strategic Control channel noted two Russian MiG-31s took off, each capable of carrying one Kinzhal. A loud explosion was heard in Lviv, though it was unclear whether it was air defense intercepts or an impact. The Lviv regional channel reported at least two missiles likely reached western Ukraine.

At 15:11, a monitoring channel said the MiG-31s had returned to Savasleyka air base. Separately, a warning was issued about potential ballistic launches from Russia’s Voronezh region - referring to Iskander‑M/KN‑23/S‑300 class missiles with ranges of 300–500 km.

Update 15:28: Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi said two Russian Kinzhal missiles were heading for the city. Both were neutralized by air defenses, he said, adding the attack occurred around 14:40 local time.

Russia has already used Kinzhal missiles against Ukraine in February 2026. The most recent strike before today came overnight on February 6. The Ukrainian Air Force said Russia launched a total of 335 aerial targets in that attack, including two Kinzhal air‑launched ballistic missiles and five Kh‑59/Kh‑69s. Command reported 297 drones were shot down; there was no confirmation of missile shootdowns. The next day, another mass missile‑and‑drone strike targeted the Khmelnytskyi, Vinnytsia, Burshtyn and Dobrotvir thermal power plants.
