Ukrainian drones strike Volgograd, damaging homes and infrastructure

Explosions were heard overnight into February 13 in the Russian city of Volgograd, in what authorities said was a drone attack. Russian officials reported several injuries.

Regional governor Andrei Bocharov said residential buildings were struck, according to V1.RU.

He said a residential building was hit and a 12-year-old boy was hospitalized. In total, three people were reported injured.

Bocharov also said infrastructure sites in Volgograd and the wider region were hit, and reported “falls of UAV debris.” Local authorities set up a temporary shelter after the attack. Several cars were damaged and windows were blown out, the governor said.

Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed it shot down 58 Ukrainian drones overnight, including 43 over the Volgograd region.

Explosions were also reported overnight in the city of Volzhsky in Volgograd region.

Ukraine’s military has not commented on the reported attacks in Volgograd region.

The Telegram channel “Supernova+” noted that one video posted by Russian users appeared to show the wing of a Ukrainian FP-2 drone.

On the night of February 11, residents of Volgograd were awakened by a series of explosions in the city. Drones struck the local Lukoil oil refinery, and a large fire broke out at the facility, according to Russian outlet Astra. Footage and eyewitness accounts indicated the Lukoil-Volgogradneftepererabotka complex in the Krasnoarmeysky district was burning. Journalists estimated it was the ninth attack on the plant since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

After that strike, the Volgograd refinery halted oil processing. In 2024, the plant processed 13.5 million metric tons of crude, about 5% of Russia’s total refining.
