Ukraine says SBU special forces destroyed half of Russia’s Pantsir air-defense systems in 2025

Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) says fighters from its Alpha Special Operations Center destroyed half of Russia’s Pantsir surface-to-air missile and gun systems in 2025.

The Pantsir is described as one of Russia’s modern, key air-defense systems, with each unit costing between $15 million and $20 million. According to the SBU, Pantsir batteries are among the most effective against Ukraine’s long-range drones.

“That is why the systematic destruction of ‘Pantsirs’ has a strategic aim - to break through the enemy’s air defenses and create corridors to strike targets deep in the rear. This enables Ukraine’s Defense Forces to effectively hit military bases, depots, airfields and other Russian facilities,” the SBU said.

The total value of Russian air-defense systems destroyed by the SBU’s Alpha unit in 2025 is estimated at roughly $4 billion, according to the agency.

Separately, Ukraine’s Defense Forces said they struck a Russian BK-16 transport-landing craft and an RSP-10 radar station in temporarily occupied Crimea.

Ukraine’s military also reported that 1,070 Russian troops were killed or wounded over the past 24 hours, bringing Russia’s overall losses in the war to 1,252,020, according to the General Staff.
