Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky says prospects for expanded bilateral ties with Japan are growing, including in the defense sphere.
Zelensky said there is an opportunity to take cooperation with Japan to a new level, moving beyond humanitarian and energy support to full-fledged defense collaboration.
He noted that Ukraine and Japan have long maintained stable relations, but now have a chance to open a “historic page” focused on military and technological cooperation.
According to Zelensky, dialogue between the two countries is already well established at the level of governments and diplomatic missions. The next step, he said, could be direct engagement between the defense ministries, with potential agreements discussed at the ministerial level or in direct talks between national leaders.
Zelensky highlighted Japan’s high-tech potential, saying the country has significant capabilities in developing and producing missiles as well as air defense systems capable of countering ballistic threats. Ukraine, he added, is interested not only in purchases but also in joint projects, including technology exchange and co-production.
Zelensky said Ukraine is ready to share its own experience gained during the full-scale war with Russia—particularly in the use of naval drones that have proven effective in the Black Sea. According to him, these systems have significantly constrained the Russian fleet near Ukraine’s coast.
Ukraine can also offer Japan expertise in cybersecurity, energy management under crisis conditions, and advanced drone solutions, including interceptor UAVs. This know-how, Zelensky said, has been forged in real combat and could benefit partners.
The president invited Japan’s prime minister to visit Ukraine and said he is prepared to travel to Japan, arguing that in-person meetings would accelerate bilateral cooperation.
