Bulgaria has delivered 13 packages of military assistance to Ukraine since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in 2022, with the latest tranche approved by the Council of Ministers on February 12, according to Novinite
Officials have not disclosed the type, volume, or financial value of the aid.
The support is provided under an agreement signed on December 5, 2022, between the Bulgarian and Ukrainian defense ministries for the free transfer of weapons, equipment and ammunition. The 48th National Assembly ratified the deal on December 16, 2022, when lawmakers also decided not to publish the list of transferred arms.
Even without a full inventory, parliamentary decisions and officials’ statements have revealed some elements. In 2023, Bulgaria sent armored personnel carriers with existing armaments, as well as decommissioned or surplus man-portable air-defense systems and various types of anti-aircraft missiles to bolster Ukraine’s air defenses.
In late 2024, then-acting Defense Minister Atanas Zapryanov confirmed that Bulgarian 2S1 Gvozdika self-propelled artillery systems are in use in Ukraine. Beyond heavy equipment and munitions, Bulgaria has provided helmets, body armor, medical kits, winter clothing and footwear, and support for Ukrainian displaced people through a humanitarian program.
Bulgaria’s Defense Ministry says the support aligns with the country’s strategic interests and complies with parliamentary decisions.
