German Bundestag approves resolution backing Ukraine, urging more arms and tougher Russia sanctions

Germany’s Bundestag reaffirmed Berlin’s support for Ukraine in its fight against Russia’s military aggression.

On Wednesday, February 25, lawmakers approved the measure by a coalition majority, tying it to the fourth anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

The resolution, introduced by the governing parties—the conservative bloc of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and Christian Social Union (CSU), along with the Social Democratic Party (SPD)—says Ukraine is defending freedom, democracy and a rules-based international order beyond its own borders.

The Bundestag backed military aid for Kyiv and sanctions against Russia. Lawmakers said Germany should deliver enough weapons, ammunition and equipment, arguing Ukraine can secure a durable, just peace only from a position of strength. They also called for further tightening of European Union sanctions to cut Russia’s revenues, especially from oil exports.

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, speaking at the session, urged efforts toward a long-term and just peace in Ukraine. If Europe accepts land grabs and violence, it will set a precedent for other revisionist, expansionist states, he warned.

The opposition voted against the CDU/CSU and SPD proposal. The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) and the Left party accused the governing coalition of focusing too heavily on military force, while the Greens criticized the resolution as not comprehensive enough.

In late January, Germany’s Bundesrat also passed a resolution in support of Ukraine.
