Hungary boosts security at critical infrastructure as Orban warns of possible Ukrainian actions

Hungary is tightening security at key energy sites and introducing additional measures after an emergency meeting of its Defense Council.

Prime Minister Viktor Orban accused Ukraine of imposing an “oil blockade” on Hungary. He convened an emergency Defense Council session, suggested Kyiv may try to disrupt Hungary’s energy system, and ordered troops to be stationed near energy facilities.

Video of Orban’s remarks at the meeting was posted on his Facebook page.

According to the prime minister, authorities have information about possible “further actions” by Ukraine that he claims could be aimed at “disrupting the operation of the Hungarian energy system.”

Orban said he has ordered soldiers to be deployed near key energy facilities and provided with necessary protective gear.

Police are also to increase patrols around power plants, distribution hubs and control centers.

The outlet Medián called the measures preventive and said they appear aimed at deterring potential attacks.

Orban did not provide specific details about the nature of the threat, its sources or the reliability of the information.

Separately, the government imposed a ban on the use of drones in Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County in the east, which borders Ukraine.

Orban concluded his address by saying Hungary would not allow itself to be pressured.

Hungary’s Defense Council has operated since 2022 and holds special powers over national security, defense, counterterrorism, crisis management and border protection. Under Hungarian law, critical infrastructure includes facilities, networks and systems necessary for basic services, including energy assets, transportation hubs, communications networks and other vital elements of the economy. Authorities have not yet specified which sites will receive enhanced protection under the new measures.
