Russia attacks Ukraine with 29 missiles and 480 drones, striking energy and transport sites, causing casualties

Overnight into Saturday, March 7, Russian forces carried out a massive, combined strike across Ukraine. Ukrainian authorities report dead and injured.

Russia launched 29 missiles at Ukraine, nearly half of them ballistic, and 480 drones, most of them “Shaheds,” President Volodymyr Zelensky said.

Russian forces targeted energy infrastructure in Kyiv, as well as in Khmelnytskyi and Chernivtsi regions, and the railway in Zhytomyr region. Damage was recorded in Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhia, Vinnytsia, Odesa, Poltava, Sumy and Cherkasy regions, the president added.

One of the ballistic missiles that hit Kharkiv slammed into a high-rise in the Kyivskyi district, nearly destroying the building. Seven people are confirmed dead, including two children.

In the Holosiivskyi district of Kyiv, falling debris caused smoke and a fire on non-residential property, Mayor Vitali Klitschko said.

Debris from missiles was found in the Desnianskyi and Dniprovskyi districts. No casualties were initially reported.

Fifteen Russian UAVs were shot down overnight in different districts over Dnipropetrovsk region, regional chief Oleksandr Hanzha said.

According to the Ukrainian State Emergency Service, Russian forces struck an infrastructure facility, sparking a fire. Nearly 200 rescuers and 60 units of equipment are working at the site.

Khmelnytskyi region

Windows were damaged at a railway station in Shepetivka district in Khmelnytskyi fregion in a Russian attack, regional chief Serhii Tyurin said. A fire broke out and was extinguished by rescuers. No casualties were reported. 

The official also reported power supply disruptions.

In the Odesa region, An infrastructure facility was hit, regional chief Serhii Lysak said.

Fires broke out in vegetable oil storage tanks and a grain warehouse was damaged, Deputy Prime Minister for Ukraine’s Reconstruction and Minister for Communities and Territories Development Oleksii Kuleba said. Port infrastructure at another port was also damaged.

A strike on Zaporizhzhia damaged three apartment buildings and three private houses in the Dniprovskiy district, regional chief Ivan Fedorov said. A three-month-old girl was injured and remains under doctors’ care in moderate condition.

The city of Novodnistrovsk came under a combined attack of cruise missiles and drones, the Chernivtsi City Council reported.

Russian forces attacked the Dniester Hydroelectric Power Plant. Power outages were reported in the region.

Radio-technical troops detected 509 aerial threats, the Ukrainian Air Force said.

They included:

- 2 Zircon hypersonic missiles;

- 13 Iskander-M/S-400 ballistic missiles;

- 14 Kalibr cruise missiles;

- 480 strike UAVs.

Preliminarily, air defenses shot down or suppressed 472 targets — 19 missiles and 453 drones:

- 8 Iskander-M/S-400 ballistic missiles;

- 11 Kalibr cruise missiles;

- 453 enemy UAVs.

There were confirmed impacts from nine missiles and 26 strike UAVs at 22 locations, as well as debris from downed UAVs falling at five locations. Information on one enemy missile is being clarified.
