Moscow weighs ousting Sevastopol air-defense command as Crimea’s defenses falter

In the occupied Crimea, the command of Russia’s Sevastopol air-defense division is reportedly facing dismissal over repeated losses of air-defense assets.

Russia’s air-defense network in Crimea has increasingly proved ineffective. A commission from Moscow has been dispatched to Sevastopol to consider replacing the division’s leadership.

The partisan movement “Atesh” says the command of the Sevastopol air-defense division of Russia’s armed forces is under threat of being fired due to systematic losses of air-defense systems that have markedly weakened the peninsula’s defenses.

According to an Atesh source, an inspection commission from Moscow has arrived in Sevastopol and is weighing a shake-up at the 31st Air Defense Division, part of the 4th Air and Air Defense Army within the Southern Military District. The division is responsible for shielding the airspace over Crimea, including Sevastopol and Dzhankoi, using S-400 Triumf systems.

The ongoing losses of Russian air-defense assets have weakened defenses not only in Crimea but also in the Kherson region. Moscow appears to be acknowledging shortcomings in the performance of its units.
